1. 85-year-old Washougal man faces vehicular homicide after hitting 2 people, killing 1 at Big Foot tavern

An 85-year-old man is accused of hitting two people with his car on Sunday in Washougal as they were helping him to park, killing one.

Jesse T. Shehan of Washougal initially appeared Monday in Clark County Superior Court on an allegation of vehicular homicide. But his hearing was set over a day due to concerns over his cognitive functions.

2. Vancouver developer Hurley buys ‘Bridge Sub’, which could be in I-5 Bridge’s path, along with company’s HQ

The historic Bridge Sub substation has a new owner: Vancouver developer Hurley Development. The building’s destiny, however, isn’t certain.

Clark Public Utilities listed its century-old substation building for sale earlier this year after the utility declared it surplus.

3. Hudson’s Bay custodian reported finding teacher, student having sex on Vancouver campus in 2013, court records say

A judge on Monday ordered $100,000 bail for a Hudson’s Bay High School teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old female student at school in 2013, an allegation that was reported to school administrators at the time.

Shadbreon Gatson, 43, an English teacher, appeared in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor. He was arrested Friday after the former student, now 27, reported to Hudson’s Bay staff and Vancouver police earlier this month that she was sexually victimized.

4. GoFundMe raises 13,000 for four people injured in Vancouver food truck explosion

Four people were sent to a hospital with severe burns after a food truck exploded in downtown Vancouver.

The explosion occurred Dec. 15 inside the 4 Caminos food truck while owner, Isabel Castellón, her son, her partner and one other employee, were preparing to serve at a community event, Posada Navideña, at La Casita Art Gallery & Cultural Center, according to a GoFundMe.

5. Data centers will gobble up every bit of electricity in Northwest, say experts

The Northwest will soon not have enough electricity to meet an explosion in demand from the tech industry as companies inject power-hungry artificial intelligence into every facet of life.

That was the sobering message a panel of tech and electricity industry experts delivered to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council earlier this month. Panelists also said the council’s current data center demand forecasts significantly undershoot what’s coming, increases in technology’s efficiency will only drive further demand and people will die in blackouts if capacity isn’t expanded.
