KENNEWICK — Kyle Chyzowski’s goal with 2:27 to play in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Portland Winterhawks held off the Tri-City Americans 4-3 Saturday at the Toyota Center.

It was the sixth Western Hockey League victory in a row for Portland (20-12-2-0) and a sweep of back-to-back games against Tri-City (19-10-2-1).

The Winterhawks opened the scoring 5:26 into the game on Reed Brown’s fourth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Tri-City tied it up on Jake Sloan’s goal.

The rest of the scoring came in about an eight-minute span of the second period.

Josh Zakreski’s 20th goal made it 2-1 Portland, but Tri-City would tie the game at 2-2 just 1:12 after the Winterhawks took the lead.

Tyson Jugnauth put the Winterhawks ahead with an assist from Alex Weiermair, only to have Tri-City tie it again on Max Curran’s second goal of the game.

Marek Schlenker made 40 saves on 43 shots for Portland. Nathan Preston stopped 27 of 31 shots for Tri-City.

Portland leads the season series 2-0-1-0 with three more meetings to come.
