Despite shooting 30 percent from the field, the Camas girls basketball team wrapped up their second win Monday at the there-day Surf ‘N Slam Tournament in San Diego with a 55-50 win over St. Xaverian of New York.
The Papermakers (7-2 overall) went 2-1 at the tournament.
“We challenged ourselves in the top bracket,” head coach Scott Thompson said, “and the reward is we come back home as an improved team.”
Baylie Farra hit consecutive 3s in the fourth quarter to give Camas a cushion, and the Papermakers sealed it down the stretch behind free throws. She finished with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting, including 5 of 11 on 3s.
Twelve of Camas’ 18 field goals were 3s.
Keirra Thompson added 17 points and Lauren Hood chipped in 10.
UNION 57, IDA B. WELLS (Ore.) 49 — The Titans overcame a sluggish first half of shooting to rally from an eight-point halftime deficit to win the Pearl bracket of the POA Holiday Classic in Portland.
Union trailed by eight at the break after going 0 for 13 from the 3-point arc in the first half. In the second, the Titans shot 55 percent from 3.
Brooklynn Haywood had 24 of her team-best 29 points in the second half. Jalise Chatman added nine points and nine rebounds and Myla Larry chipped in six points and 11 rebounds.
BATTLE GROUND 43, ST. MARY’S (Ore.) 22 — The Tigers closed out their second holiday tournament in as many weeks with a win on the final day of the POA Holiday Classic in Portland.
Marissa Loveall led Battle Ground with a game-best 15 points and Charlotte Clarke added 10. Ava Robertson chipped in nine on three 3-pointers.
SAINT JOSEPH’S (Calif.) 59, MOUNTAIN VIEW 37 — Amaya Paschal led the Thunder with 14 points in a Sapphire bracket championship game loss at the POA Holiday Classic in Portland.
HOQUIAM 49, KALAMA 41 — The visiting Grizzlies outscored Kalama 18-3 in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead into halftime. Aubrey Doerty led the Chinooks with 16 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Bridgett Hollifield and Riley Bromley combined for 14 rebounds and five steals.
SOUTH SALEM (Ore.) 67, EVERGREEN 58 — The Plainsmen earned third place in the Pearl bracket of the POA Holiday Classic in Portland.
SKYVIEW 50, CLEVELAND (Ore.) 36 — The Storm earned third place in the Jade bracket of the POA Holiday Classic in Portland.
BOYS BASKETBALL
SAM BARLOW (Ore.) 63, CAMAS 49 — The Oregon 6A Bruins shot 48 percent from the field to win the consolation championship of the Les Schwab Invitational.
Camas, making its first appearance in the tournament’s 28-year run, finished the tournament 2-2.
Barlow outscored Camas 17-6 in the second quarter to take a 28-16 lead into halftime, and was powered by Mason Bierbrauer’s game-high 31 points on 14 of 20 shooting.
Ethan Harris led Camas with 18 points and nine rebounds as one of three Papermakers in double figures. Nyima Namru had 14, and Jace VanVoorhis added 10.
KALAMA 75, MORTON-WHITE PASS 68 — Gavin McBride had 24 points and nine rebounds as the Chinooks moved to 6-1 on the season with a non-league road win. Drew Schlangan added 13 and Abel Koski added 11.
