Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will begin emergency pavement repairs Tuesday on state Highway 14 West Camas Slough Bridge to address damaged pavement.

The crews will close eastbound Highway 14 near the West Camas Slough Bridge at Milepost 12.6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Travelers will detour around the closure using Exit 12 to Northwest Sixth Avenue, according to a WSDOT news release.

WSDOT lowered the speed limit to 35 mph just west of the bridge after finding failing pavement on the aging bridge deck last week. The department advises travelers to use caution in the area until the repairs are completed. There will be a sign warning of bumpy pavement for motorcyclists.

The repairs will be temporary until a permanent repair can be done.

The bridge deck, built in 1966, has worsened over time due to traffic and weather, according to the news release. The bridge has cracks and an uneven surface. Now, large potholes have formed.

“While the bridge structure itself is sound and has a bridge rating of ‘fair,’ the pavement on the bridge deck is far beyond its serviceable life,” the news release said.
