SEATTLE — The 18-day voting period for Washington’s 2024 primary election is approaching, as mail-in ballots make their way to more than 4.8 million registered voters across the state.

Here’s what Washingtonians need to know about the Aug. 6 primary.

  • When will my ballot be mailed?

All registered voters in Washington should automatically receive a mail-in ballot. Counties must mail out their ballots by July 19, 18 days before Election Day, as required by state law.

  • When do I need to mail my ballot?

The U.S. Postal Service recommends voters mail their ballots back by July 30 to ensure they arrive on time, according to a fact sheet from the Washington Secretary of State.

The fact sheet says mailed ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day, Aug. 6.

  • Where can I find a ballot drop box?

Voters can use drop boxes instead of mailing their ballots.

A complete list of drop box locations in Clark County can be found at clark.wa.gov/elections/ballot-deposit-locations.

Drop boxes will close at 8 p.m. Aug. 6.

  • What is required to submit my ballot?

All ballots must be signed to be counted. The elections office checks each signature and, if a ballot does not have a signature, voters will be given almost two weeks after Election Day to resolve their ballots.

  • Do I still have time to register?

Yes. The deadline to register to vote online and by mail is July 29. However, residents can register in person on Election Day (Aug. 6) at a county elections office if they do so by 8 p.m.

To register online, you must have a current Washington driver’s license, permit or ID card.

Registration information can be found at clark.wa.gov/elections/registering-vote.

  • Can I still vote in person?

Yes, technically. While the vast majority of people will vote by mail, each county opens voting centers with regular business hours to help people fill out their ballots.

These locations can be used to register to vote or obtain a voter registration card. The centers also assist those who need help completing their ballot.

You can log into VoteWA.gov to find the closest one near you.

  • Is voting by mail or drop box secure?

Yes. Ballots are taken to a secure facility. The drop boxes will be emptied every evening during the workweek.

Voters can also track their ballots by signing up for text alerts.
