Letter: Kent ads are misleading

By Dennis Fernandes, PORTLAND
Published: November 1, 2024, 6:00am

We don’t typically see many political ads here in Oregon.

But we are slammed with ads on the Marie Perez-Joe Kent race. I and many Portlanders take exception to Mr. Kent’s depiction of Portland as some crime- and drug-ridden dystopian landscape. We see it a different way — lots of neighborhoods here are working together and taking care of each other.

Maybe your ad will create misdirected anxiety as so many of these things are designed to do. But I donated money to Perez because these ads made me so angry.

If Portland is such an awful place, why are our streets and freeways clogged with Washington motorists all the time? Makes me wonder if we should fast track the rebuilding of the Interstate Bridge (which needs to happen anyway) and the tolls that would be necessary to pay for it unless Biden’s infrastructure bill can cover it.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
