Parade, concert and events honor those who served on Veterans Day in Clark County

Veterans Day is Nov. 11. Several upcoming Clark County events honor veterans’ service to our country.

The Historic Trust will honor veterans during the Lough Legacy Veterans Day Parade from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The parade begins at the east end of Officers Row at East Reserve Street and Evergreen Boulevard. The route continues around the Fort Vancouver National Site, ending on Fifth Street past the Pearson Air Museum. The parade normally attracts 75 entries, with approximately 1,500 people marching or riding in the parade. Groups and organizations that would like to honor veterans are encouraged to participate. In honor of Veterans Day, The American Legion Smith-Reynolds Post 14, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 14 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 14 will host a Veterans Day Lunch from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at 4607 N.E. St. James Road, Vancouver. The meal includes potato soup, ham sandwiches and dessert. Veterans eat for free with proof of veteran status, and the public is welcome to dine for $5. Participants and spectators of the Vancouver Veterans Day Parade, which begins at 11 a.m., are invited to join the lunch afterward. For more details, call 360-696-2579.

The North Clark Historical Museum will host its 37th annual community celebration honoring veterans Nov. 9 at Mt. Valley Grange #79, 40107 N.E. 221st Ave., Amboy. The event starts at 1 p.m. with a pie and ice cream social in the basement; admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children.

The program begins at 2 p.m. with speaker John Nanny of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Fargher Lake Grange will be recognized for its contributions to the community with speaker Larry Goble. Danae Castle will sing a medley of patriotic songs. The Amboy Middle School Band will provide entertainment. American Legion Tum Tum Post #168 will present the flag and lead the flag salute.

All veterans will receive a free raffle ticket for a patriotic quilt made and donated by the Chelatchie Quilters. The quilt is lap-size and may be won only by a veteran. The winning ticket for the raffle quilt “Winter Magic” will be drawn. A door prize raffle winner will also be drawn.

The American Legion Smith-Reynolds Post 14 Holiday Artisan Market is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9 at 4607 N.E. St. James Road, Vancouver. Vendors will offer handcrafted gifts and baked goods. Proceeds support veterans and their families. For more details, call 360-696-2579.

The all-volunteer Westwinds Community Band will offer a free Salute to Veterans concert from 3 to 4 p.m. Nov. 9. This musical tribute at Mill Plain United Methodist Church, 15804 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, will feature popular patriotic tunes in recognition of America’s veterans.

King’s Way Christian School, 3606 N.E. 78th St., Vancouver, will host two Veterans Day assemblies in the sanctuary, at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday,
in honor of local veterans, who are invited to attend. A reception will follow the 8:30 a.m. assembly. RSVP by contacting Marla Riley at 360-816-1509 or

Discovery Dental will host a Veterans Day event from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 8 at 2530 E St., Washougal. Veterans with a military ID card or military service records can receive one free dental treatment such as a cleaning, filling or extraction. Services are by appointment or walk-in. The Oregon Zoo will offer free admission for veterans from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 11 for military members, veterans and their families. Admission includes up to three extra tickets per active military member and veteran, for four tickets total. Families of deployed military personnel will also be given free admission.
