Clark County Jail staff erroneously released an inmate after he completed his local sentence when he should’ve instead been transported to Oregon to serve the remainder of a prison sentence there, county officials said Monday.

Maurice Xavier Haynes, 27, pleaded guilty Oct. 28 in Clark County Superior Court to second-degree theft. Judge David Gregerson sentenced Haynes to 38 days in jail, with jail staff to calculate any credit he had for time served while the case was pending, court records show.

According to a statement from the county, Haynes had previously been sentenced to 15 months in Oregon prison for first-degree criminal mischief, with his sentence set to expire Sept. 17.

Jail leadership is conducting an internal affairs investigation to determine how Haynes was mistakenly released, according to the county statement.

Law enforcement has issued a warrant for Haynes’ arrest, and the county said Monday he remained at large.

Officials describe Haynes as a Black man who is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighs about 170 pounds and has a tattoo on his right forearm that says “Markisha.”

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact local law enforcement.
