CAMAS — Coach Adam Mathieson likes to say that a quarterback either needs to have a lot of best friends or no best friends at all.

Luckily for Jake Davidson, the Camas senior quarterback has a lot of really good friends.

Davidson passed for six touchdowns to four different receivers as Camas rolled to a 56-3 win over Stadium of Tacoma in a Class 4A state preliminary playoff game Friday at Doc Harris Stadium.

Davidson threw two touchdown passes each Chase McGee and Nikko Speer as well as ones to Anthony Forner and Ryder Jacobson, as the Papermaker scored touchdowns on all eight of their possessions.

“Chase has a great game, Nikko has a great game,” Davidson said. “So you can’t double-team one receiver because we have guys everywhere. If you double one guy, we’re just going to throw to someone else, and that’s going to work for us.”

Davidson completed 17 of 21 passes for 276 yards, and Mathieson said finding the right receiver was a big part of Davidson’s success on Friday.

“Jake’s got to let the scheme come to him,” Mathieson said. “There were a couple of times when we called some plays (in which) we were targeting a certain area of the field. And (Stadium) capped that pre-snap, and it was like ‘uh oh.’ And he read it perfectly and went away from it. His ability to kind of move from the first read to the second read, even into the third read, he did a great job tonight.”

Anthony Forner was the receiving standout on Friday with five catches for 134 yards and a 41-yard touchdown reception that put Camas up 29-3 at halftime.

But McGee had six catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Speer only caught two passes for 28 yards, but both went for touchdowns, including a dazzling diving catch in the third quarter that gave Camas a 49-3 lead.

“That’s one of the best catches I’ve seen,” Davidson said. “I threw it a little bit off, but then he made the play. That’s what he does.”

Speer was the 4A Greater St. Helens League defensive player of the year last season, but Mathieson said he is just as valuable on offense.

“He’s a special player,” Mathieson said. “He loves playing linebacker, but man, if I’m coaching at the next level, I’m looking at him as an H back. I mean, we play him as an in-line tight end, we play him flexed out, we play him as a receiver, we play him in the backfield. I mean he’s a jack-of-all-trades. They talk about jack-of-all-trades and master of none. He’s a master of a lot of things. Pretty cool.”

On defense, Speer helped the Papermakers hold Stadium to 113 net yards of offense, with 68 coming on two plays.

Camas (10-0) is top-ranked and rolling on both sides of the ball heading into the first-round of the playoffs. But Davidson is taking nothing for granted.

“It’s a playoff time, and we’ve got to send a message to the state,” Davidson said. “What happened last year was we were first-round outs. I mean that hit our whole team hard. We want to prove more.”
