Clark Penguins recap: Mia Beightol wins NWAC cross country title

Women place 2nd as team; men place 4th

Clark College freshman Mia Beightol won the NWAC Cross Country women’s title on Saturday, helping the Penguins finish second as a team.

Beightol, a grad of Hanford High in Richland, finished the 5K course at Chamber Creek Regional Park with a time of 18 minutes, 18.4 seconds to win by 14 seconds of Kaley Bohl of Spokane.

There were 66 runners in the field, and NWAC awards All-American status to the top-seven runners.

Clark scored 67 points as a team, while Spokane won with 24 points.

The Penguins were grouped together well as their next six runners finished in pairs.

Clark freshman Vaughn Shimko and sophomore Dani Buttrell placed 12th and 13th. Shimko’s time of 20:23.3, and Buttrell finished in 20:27.1.

Sophomore Lauren Filipczak (20:59.2) and freshman Kennedy Taylor (21:01.2) were 20th and 21st; and sophomore Emma Cortez (21:37.7) and freshman Taylor Souders (21:43.8) were 30th and 31st overall.

The Clark men’s team was fourth with 93 points. Spokane completed the team sweep with 42 points.

The Penguins’ top runner was freshman Branden Chou, a Mountain View High grad, placing fourth overall on the 8K course in 26:43.0. There were 80 runners competing.

Gilbert Langat of Spokane posted a winning time of 25:34.2.

Washougal High grad Samuel Grice, a freshman at Green River College, was third in 26:32.5.

Also for Clark, freshman Cain Duncan was 10th in 26:59.3. Dylan Stevenson (27:36.7) and Timothy Bradshaw (27:55.5) finished 28th and 29th overall, Ryan Koenninger was 34th (28:05.9), Elijah Cisneros 37th (28:22.7) and Conner Olmstead 40th (28:30.0).

Soccer

CLARK MEN ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS — The Clark College men’s soccer team defeated previously unbeaten Columbia Basin on penalies Saturday at Pasco to advance to the NWAC semifinals.

After playing to a 1-1 draw after regulation and two overtime periods, it came down to kicks.

Clark’s Christian Silva had the game-winner. Ethan Hundt, Camas High grad JP Warnell, Tymathe Prince, and Abraham Alvarez-Cast made the first four kicks.

Milos Mavrak had the match-tying goal for the Penguins in the 31st minute.

Clark (15-1-2) advances to play Everett at 4 p.m. Friday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila. The championship game is 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Starfire.

CLARK WOMEN’S SEASON ENDS WITH QUARTEFINAL LOSS — The season ended for the Penguins with a 1-0 loss to Columbia Basin in the NWAC quarterfinals at Pasco. Columbia Basin scored its goal in the 56th minute. Clark had nine shots, three of which were on goal.

Clark (9-2-3) had not lost a match since its NWAC opener against Lower Columbia on Sept. 4.
