Portland Winterhawks shut down by Calgary’s Kason Kobelka, 3-1

Goalie makes 26 saves on 27 shots; Buttazzoni has goal for Portland

PORTLAND — Kason Kobelka came within two minutes of a shutout as the Calgary Hitmen skated to a 3-1 Western Hockey League victory over the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night.

Kobelka stopped 26 of 27 shots for the Hitmen (8-7-3-1), who took a 1-0 lead into the third period.

Diego Buttazzoni scored for the Winterhawks (8-8-2-0) at 18:07 of the third period. Marek Schlenker stopped 23 of 25 shots in the Winterhawks’ net.

Chase Valliant, Keets Fawcett and Carson Wetsch (empty-netter) each scored for Calgary.

The teams were a combined 0-for-10 on power-play opportunities. The Hitmen went 0-for-6, while the Winterhawks were 0-for-4.

Portland has been shutout just once so far this season, coming Oct. 19 against Everett.
