A pedestrian in a crosswalk crossing an intersection against the light was hit by a car and killed Thursday night in east Vancouver, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The pedestrian’s identity has not yet been released.

Officers responded about 6:20 p.m. to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash at the intersection of Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard and 117th Avenue, according to a statement from the police department.

The pedestrian was in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection, against the light, when a vehicle approached the intersection and hit the pedestrian, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the police statement.

“Drivers, especially during hours of darkness or when there is reduced visibility, should remain alert to possible pedestrians in and around intersections and maintain legal speeds,” the police department said in the statement.

The Vancouver Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating.

The department said this is the 14th fatal crash this year that the traffic unit has investigated.
