Letter: ‘Zero sum’ is nonsensical

By John S. Burke, Vancouver

The editorial headline “Law enforcement is not a zero-sum equation” (In Our View, Nov. 21) confounds me.

One repeatedly sees this phrase “a zero sum game” being used in the media. I ask myself repeatedly “what the hell does that really mean?” And so I Google it again and am reminded that it essentially means, I think, “no one wins.”

Undoubtedly some political/media hack came up with this phrase. For the sake of clarity, can we please move on to a more direct meaning and cease this overly cute and nonsensical phrase?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
