Camas City Council member John Svilarich was arrested Friday in connection with an Aug. 31 altercation with a fisherman along the Washougal River Greenway in Camas.

Svilarich, 66, was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor crimes of reckless endangerment and aiming or discharging a firearm. He was processed at the Camas Police Department and released, according to a Friday police news release.

Camas police said the incident began as a verbal argument between a pedestrian and a fisherman just before 8 a.m. Aug. 31. The argument escalated and continued along the walking path to the point where the pedestrian, later identified as Svilarich, threw an 8-inch rock from the footbridge toward the fisherman below. He then brandished a handgun and pointed it at the fisherman, the news release said.

Officers interviewed both Svilarich and the fisherman, as well as witnesses, on the day of the incident.

Svilarich surrendered the handgun to detectives, police said.

A spokesperson for the city of Camas said the council didn’t have a statement regarding Svilarich’s arrest Friday afternoon. Svilarich could not be reached for comment Friday.

Svilarich is scheduled to appear Sept. 26 in Camas Municipal Court.
