Prepare for delays on Interstate 5 in Cowlitz County due to cable barrier repairs

Travelers on Interstate 5 in Cowlitz County should prepare for daytime delays starting Tuesday as maintenance crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation begin repairs on a damaged cable barrier. The delays will end Thursday.

The project will close one lane of southbound I-5 near Dike Access Road.

Cable barriers, made of steel cables and posts, are vital in preventing vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic. In addition to repairing the barrier, crews will be clearing nearby drainage systems and removing trash and debris from the area.

From 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today, the left lane of southbound I-5 near Dike Access Road between mileposts 18.7 and 18 will be closed.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, the left lane of southbound I-5 near Dike Access Road between mileposts 21.5 and 20 will be closed.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, the left lane of northbound I-5 between mileposts 21.5 and 20.5 will be closed.

Drivers should slow down when approaching the work zones, exercise patience, and anticipate delays during these times, according to the transportation department.
