There is a rhythm that comes from repetition, not just visual cohesion but also the continuity created by pattern. From artwork hung in a series to accessories placed into vignettes, the use of groupings and pairs is a designer hack that’s especially useful when blending unrelated items.

When looking for ways to incorporate groupings and pairs, here are some top tips.

  • Use pairs when working with similar or identical items.
  • Pair or group items of similar color or shape.
  • Place groupings and patterns in prominent spaces like entry consoles and sideboards.
  • Group unrelated but similar items together.
  • Create dynamic groupings by utilizing items of various height and shape.
  • Consider using objects grouped in an odd number like three or five when looking to cover larger areas such as coffee tables.
  • Consider using pairs when working with smaller surfaces like side tables.
  • Incorporate greenery when looking to add a bit of texture.
  • Rotate groupings and pairings to create a sense of freshness.
  • Use the design hack of pairs and grouping both for both interior and exterior spaces.
