Clark College Report: Penguins baseball splits with Tacoma

Tyler Ramelli and Kenneth Hall combined to allow just four hits as the Clark College baseball team beat Tacoma 6-3 to earn a doubleheader split on Saturday at Kindsfather Field.

Trevin Long went 2 for 3, including an RBI double that gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning. Rylan Taguchi scored two runs, one of which came by taking home on a double steal in the sixth inning.

Taguchi, a freshman catcher from Highlands Ranch, Colo., ranks second in the Northwest Athletic Conference with a .400 batting average.

Clark (8-9, 1-1 NWAC West) opened Saturday’s doubleheader with a 7-4 loss to Tacoma.

Kobin Mullins and Kaiden Hernandez each had two hits for Clark, which rallied from 4-1 down to pull even in the fifth inning. But Tacoma (10-12, 3-3) responded with three runs in the sixth inning.

This week: The Penguins host Grays Harbor (2-25, 0-8) Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Clark then travels to Aberdeen on Sunday for another doubleheader against the Chokers.

Softball

Record: 8-16, 6-10 NWAC South.

Last week: Gabriela Ventura’s two-RBI double keyed a four-run second inning as Clark beat Mt. Hood 5-3 on Saturday to earn a doubleheader split.

Ventura, a sophomore from Columbia River High School, ranks second on the team with 22 hits and is hitting .333 this season.

Mount Hood (20-4) pulled within 4-3 in the fourth inning, but Ashley Griffith (Union HS) doubled to score Promise Bond (Hudson’s Bay HS) in the fifth inning.

Delaney Bollman (Evergreen HS) allowed six hits and no walks over seven innings to earn the win.

Clark dropped the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader 15-0.

This week: The Penguins head to Yakima for a Friday doubleheader against Yakima Valley before two games each on Saturday and Sunday in an NWAC Crossover event.

Track and Field

Last week: Multiple Clark athletes posted personal bests Saturday at the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational hosted by Linfield in McMinnville, Ore.

Ryan Koenninger (Skyview HS) ran his fastest 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning in an NWAC season-best time of 9 minutes, 50.79 seconds.

Koynn Williamdyke (R.A. Long HS) won the 400 hurdles in a personal-best of 54.37 seconds, the second-fastest time in the NWAC this season.

J’Quan Collins (Fort Vancouver HS) placed second in the 100 with a personal best of 10.98. He also teamed with Ian Ebinger (Battle Ground HS), Jackson McQuain (Beaverton HS) and Williamdyke on the winning 400 relay that posted a season best of 42.12, the second-best time in the NWAC.

Beau Swett (Woodland HS) won the high jump with an NWAC-leading mark of 6 feet, 6 inches. He also placed fourth in the long jump in an NWAC-best 21 feet, 10.75 inches.

On the women’s side, Mia Beightol won the 5,000 meters in 18:35.90, the second-fastest time in the NWAC this season.

Sydney Allen placed fifth in the 200 with a personal-best of 26.21, which ranks fourth in the NWAC this season.

Vaughn Shimko, Kennedy Taylor and Sadie Schierscher placed fourth through sixth, respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase all with times that rank top seven in the NWAC.

This week: The Penguins are off this weekend before competing April 19 in the Larry Byerly Invitational hosted by Lewis & Clark College in Portland.
