As a Camas resident and professional in environmental health and safety, I urge our city to reconsider fluoride in our drinking water. While once promoted for dental health, fluoridation raises ethical, medical, and practical concerns that merit renewed attention.
Fluoride is not a disinfectant — it is a medicinal additive. Delivering it through the public water supply bypasses informed consent, giving every resident the same dosage regardless of age, health or choice. This contradicts modern standards of personalized care and individual autonomy.
Moreover, fluoride is widely available in toothpaste, rinses and supplements. Those who want it can easily obtain it under professional guidance. Mass medication through drinking water is no longer necessary or equitable.
Emerging research also links excess fluoride exposure — especially in children — to dental fluorosis and potential effects on thyroid and neurological health. While not all questions are settled, the precautionary principle should apply when safety is in doubt.
Removing fluoride from our water would not eliminate access — it would restore choice. Camas can lead by respecting both science and liberty. Let’s provide clean, unmedicated water and trust our residents to make informed decisions about their health.
