Letter: Get tough on homelessness

By John Vomac, Vancouver
Published: April 16, 2025, 6:00am

While not a fan of Donald Trump (I always vote libertarian), I agree with his proposal for dealing with homelessness. He and I both say that using tax dollars to house drug addicts and wastrels is not how to do it. Stronger measures are necessary. He suggests rounding them up and destroying their encampments, and if they have issues with drug abuse or mental illness, which have contributed to homelessness, then force them into treatment, and if they resist, then jail them.

Not sure what he suggests be done for those who don’t have mental or drug issues: presumably say “no more camping in public” and jail them if they reoffend. How nice it will be not to have bums blocking sidewalks and begging.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
