Letter: Protesters stand united

By Mark W. Muenster, Vancouver
Published: April 16, 2025, 6:00am

On April 5, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, more than 3,000 people gathered at Esther Short Park. The people gathered there for many different reasons, and had many different concerns, but were all united in their conviction that “our leader” is leading America in the wrong direction. The people gathered there to show our resistance to that wrong direction.

We want a halt to wanton and senseless job cuts for our federal employees, whose work is important to this country. We want an end to the attempt to “white out” and erase the contributions of African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and others to American history and society. We want an end to the demonization of gay, lesbian and trans people. We want an end to the reckless, unjustifiable and unreasonable cuts in federal spending for health, education and infrastructure programs. We want NPR to be fully funded. We want Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid funded and protected. We want the cap on Social Security taxes to be raised so that more Americans of means pay their fair share. We want to end cuts to the enforcement of environmental laws. And, of course, we would like the price of eggs to return to normal.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
