Letter: Trade policy lacks common sense

I don’t claim to be an economist, but I think I have some common sense regarding tariffs. The U.S. is and has always been involved in the global market for trading goods and services. President Donald Trump wants to basically limit or eliminate trade with other nations around the world and have the United States become totally self-sufficient.

For the United States to become self-sufficient, it has to build up its infrastructure, which can take decades.

Once our infrastructure is up and going, now we have to hire and pay employee wages, which is so much more expensive than if the products were made in some other county, where wages are much lower. So, how is this going to keep inflation down if we have to pay more for goods and services?

Where are we going to get all these people to work manufacturing and other important jobs here in the United States if we are deporting and eliminating immigration? I feel the hardship for the people living in the United States has just begun, and those who live in other countries and depend on trade with us will suffer as well.
