Truly scent-sational

Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, 115 S. Pekin Road, Woodland, will host Lilac Days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday through May 11, Mother’s Day. This year marks the garden’s 50th anniversary. See and smell a huge variety of blooming lilacs and buy lilac starts for your own garden. Visit the museum featuring photos and memorabilia of Hulda Klager and her family. The Klager farmhouse will be open for tours every 15-20 minutes from 1 to 4 p.m. daily. Purchase raffle tickets for a lilac-themed quilt and peruse the lilac-themed items in the gift shop. Admission is $10 for adults. Children ages 12 and under are free. On Mondays, seniors age 62 years and older are $5. Parking is free. Learn more at lilacgardens.com.

Blue planet

The Watershed Alliance of Southwest Washington will offer a free screening of “Water for Life,” from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Earth Day, Tuesday, in the Columbia Room at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C St., Vancouver. The documentary tells the story of Berta Cáceres, a leader of the Lenca people in Honduras; Francisco Pineda, a subsistence farmer in El Salvador; and Alberto Curamil, an Indigenous Mapuche leader in Chile, all of whom refused to let industry and transnational corporations take their water for mining, hydroelectric projects and large-scale agriculture. Pizza will be provided, including gluten-friendly and vegan options. Attendees should bring their own water bottles. Register at thewatershedalliance.org.

Clean and green

Clark County’s Composter Recycler program is offering a series of free workshops about composting and sustainable living strategies. The next workshop is “Green Cleaning” from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Waste Connections of Washington, 9411 N.E. 94th Ave., Vancouver. Participants will learn how to make three versatile green household cleaners. Attendees will be eligible for a green cleaning kit at no cost. Register at clarkcountycomposts.org.

Puzzle it out

The Camas Public Library will host the Puzzle Palooza Jigsaw Puzzle Competition from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The competition is open to adults and teens age 13 and older. Teams of two to four people will race against the clock to complete a 500-piece puzzle in two hours; all teams will work on identical puzzles. The fastest team will win a prize and bragging rights. Registration is required at CamasPL.org/puzzlepalooza or by calling the library at 360-834-4692.

Safety first

The Emergency Preparedness and Safety Fair is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Manor Grange, 17901 N.E. 72nd Ave., Vancouver. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory will share volcano hazard and preparedness information, kicking off Volcano Awareness Month in May and marking the 45th anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption on May 18, 1980. Attendees can also get information about crime awareness and sex trafficking, wildfires, survival kits, search and rescue, animal evacuation, personal defense tools, food preservation and storage. Attendees are encouraged to enter a drawing for a handmade quilt with proceeds to benefit Battle Ground Adventist Community Services Food Bank.
