Marie Gluesenkamp Perez’s defense of her vote for the SAVE Act is lame. Her reason? She’s against noncitizens voting.
The number of noncitizens voting in elections is estimated at .001 percent, the equivalent of 3.3 Clark County voters. The SAVE Act is a solution in search of a problem. In reality, it is an attempt to disenfranchise voters, particularly married women.
Gluesenkamp Perez cites more reasons to defeat it, saying:
- The bill is unlikely to become a law due to “the filibuster as well as several deeply flawed provisions.”
- The law conflicts with Washington’s vote-by-mail system and “could undermine the votes of more than 250,000 Washington citizens whose ballots were legally counted after Election Day in the last election.”
I would expect our representative to defend our popular and safe form of voting. Why make residents provide a passport or birth certificate and marriage license in order to cast a ballot?
The only reason it appears Gluesenkamp Perez voted for it is she wanted one more “bipartisan” vote in her portfolio. At a time when the Republicans have no spine for standing up for democracy, we need our Democratic representative to stand up for fairness and sanity.
