Letter: Bridge plans don’t serve public

By Katie Bauer, Vancouver

The $900 million in extra toll bonding for the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program feels off. Why would legislators saddle Southwest Washington with a 40-year loan “just to make sure we have enough”? It’s either a slush fund, or representatives know the new cost estimate, due this summer, will be much higher than admitted.

The IBR isn’t even approved, voters have opposed light rail and the Coast Guard flagged the bridge design as too low. Elected officials keep ignoring us. We want no light rail, no tolls — just a bridge that boosts traffic flow and saves time, whether it’s a third bridge or a rebuilt I-5 with more lanes. Drop the grandstanding and serve the public.
