Letter: Perez harms democracy

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Skamania, was one of four Democrats who joined MAGA-Trump Republicans in voting for the SAVE Act, which is supposed to prevent noncitizens from voting — which is already illegal and extremely rare — and would result in the disenfranchisement of millions of American voters.

Rural voters, whom Perez claims to support, would be at a disadvantage, since the act requires that documents be provided in person. Women, who may have changed their names with marriage, would be affected since their names wouldn’t match their birth certificates. Millions of other voters don’t have passports or easy access to birth certificates or other documents could be disenfranchised.

Sean Wilentz, American history professor at Princeton, said, “This is an attempt to destroy American democracy as we know it.” Alexander Keyssar, a leading historian of voting rights, said there’s “never been an attack on voting rights out of Congress like this.”

Trump and his MAGA base have long claimed that massive voter fraud cost him the 2020 election, though there is zero evidence to back those assertions. It seems that Perez has, unfortunately for voters everywhere, bought into the MAGA narrative.
