Weather Eye: Easter to be drier than expected

I wish a glorious Easter Sunday to those who celebrate this holiday. The weather won’t be as damp as it looked earlier this week. A few scattered showers are possible, and temperatures will be on the cool side. Typical for April, with its ups and downs.

For the next week or so, the northern jet stream will be close to our north, which will keep our high temperatures closer to the seasonal average, generally in the 60s. There will be a shower or two drifting by from time to time, but overall, it will be on the dry side of things to keep April with below-normal rainfall. Vancouver is currently 1 inch below average.

With high temperatures in the 70s and brisk northerly winds this week, I checked one of my raised beds, which had strawberries and blueberries, and I was shocked that it was dry and was in need of watering. I got out the hose and gave it a good drink. Did you feel those winds on Wednesday and Thursday?

With the clear visibility Thursday, did you happen to glance at the mountains to our east? The volcano peaks were a solid white, and even the higher foothills had a dash or two of snow.

The weather, although nothing to write home about, sure gave us a panoramic view of our natural surroundings. I guess that’s why we love living in the great Northwest.

Someone was once asked why they like living here, and the adage was presented: June, July and August. Of course, that refers to our summer months, which are second to none.

Our normal high and low for this date is 62 and 42 degrees. By the last day of the month, that rises to 65 and 45 degrees.

In case you were wondering, our record high for April 19 is 87 degrees, set in 2016. The lowest was 26 degrees in 1977. That would be considered a hard freeze that could kill flowering fruit tree buds. Thank goodness, none of that is in the forecast.

I left my potted geraniums outside this week, and although they enjoyed the 70-degree daytime weather, they showed some distress, with the overnight lows in the mid- to upper 30s at my house. Botanists will tell you that hardens them up. I say it slows down the flowering aspect of the plant. It shows you that weather factors into almost every aspect of our lives.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone.
