Camas High senior Chase McGee set an all-time state record in the pole vault Tuesday, breaking Washington’s oldest record in high school track and field.

McGee cleared 17 feet, 5 inches at Camas High School in dual meet against Union to break a 56-year mark held by Orting’s Casey Carrigan, a former high school national record holder and Olympian as a teenager.

Carrigan jumped 17-4 ¾ in 1969 — a year after competing at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics at age 17. By 1975, he was the No. 1 pole vaulter in the United States.

McGee won the 4A state title last May with a lifetime-best mark at the time of 16-6. His title-winning jump in 2024 tied for third all-time at a Washington state meet across all classifications.

All-Region Sports Awards Ceremony

The Columbian will be hosting its second annual All-Region Sports Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at The Hilton Vancouver Washington.
The event will be 6-8 p.m. Admission is $15 and includes food and drink. Tickets are available now by clicking on link.

Only two marks are higher — the 4A state meet record of 17 feet, set by University’s Tyson Byers in 2002, and Carrigan’s 16-7 state-meet jump in 1969.

This spring, McGee has won the pole vault in every meet he’s competed in, including two prestigious invitationals — the Oregon Relays (16-4.25) and Arcadia Invitational (16-8).

His previous season best was 16-8 at Arcadia and matched at a home track and field meet last week.

The senior has signed to compete at track and field next year for Montana State.
