Weather Eye: Enjoy warm, dry days, as downturn heads our way

Easter weekend wasn’t all that bad weather-wise, as a fast-moving cold front early Saturday left minute amounts of moisture and the daytime hours were dry. Great for outside egg hunts. Easter Sunday had long enough dry periods for egg hunts before scattered showers moved through in the late afternoon hours. One could feel the difference in temperatures from last week, it was downright chilly. April has its moods.

As we head down the last stretch of the month, we should enjoy a few days of dry and warmer weather today before another downturn this Friday into the last weekend of April. Vancouver is running well over an inch below average rain so far this month and I’m guessing based on forecast charts through the end of the month, we will end up drier than normal for the month.

On Monday we had a cold air mass overhead with scattered light showers and snow flurries in the mountains. As skies were predicted to clear last night, I expect many locations in the county to have frost this morning. It may have been cold enough to kill or damage tender outdoor plants. I covered mine up. We should be frost-free for the rest of this week.

I glanced at the three-month weather outlook this weekend from the Climate Prediction Center, and they are predicting that for the months of May, June and July that the Pacific Northwest will likely have above-average temperatures — and that includes some early summer hot weather. It seems our summers have been getting warmer so no surprise for me.

Be active and prepare your house for warmer weather. Check heat pumps, air conditions and such for proper operating conditions. Have some fans ready if you do not have air conditioning and perhaps invest in blinds or window coverings to keep the daytime heat out.

Vancouver as of noon Monday had yet to reach 1 inch of rain for the month with a meager .99 of an inch. It was possible with a stray afternoon shower that we surpassed that statistic. In 2023 April was quite wet with 5.18 inches of rain and the average mean temperature was over 1 degree below normal. However, one bright spot was 88 degrees on April 28, 2023.

Watch as the sun pops out today and enjoy the outdoors.
