Letter: Speak up, defend Constitution

By Tom Knappenberger, Vancouver
Published: April 23, 2025, 6:00am

If you believe in our Constitution, if you believe in the rule of law, if you believe like our founders that we the people govern, not a king, then a rousing shout of “Don’t tread on me!” is due our current president. I know the tea party, libertarians, constitutionalists, Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan Republicans will join me in horror at the recent actions of our president.

Innocent Americans are being taken from their families and sent without due process to a concentration camp in El Salvador. You might shrug that they are “not real Americans, who cares?” You should. Because if our president can defy the Supreme Court and send innocents to a foreign country and claim he can’t get them back, what’s next?

As Martin Niemöller said: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”
