Letter: Trump’s power echoes Hitler

In the April 12 edition of The Columbian, there was a column by Jackie Calmes of the Los Angeles Times (“Trump’s Hitler echoes profound”) that resonated with me.

In 2012, I made a trip to Germany with three buddies, two of whom grew up in Hitler’s Germany. We visited Nuremberg’s Rise of Nazism Museum, which portrayed Hitler’s takeover of the German nation. At the end of our tour, we had a friendly debate about the possibility of such a thing happening in America. We ended up divided in our opinions, with both German-born saying it could happen.

Now it seems that they could have been right in their opinions. The parallels with Hitler’s tragic takeover in the 1930s are evident here today. Trump is trying to take over the judiciary, the press, the arts, the military, trade and other countries — just as Hitler did in his rise to power. Hitler and his cronies ended democracy in Germany and plunged Germany and the world into World War II. One shudders to think what might happen here in America if Trump has his way.
