Weather Eye: Rain remains scarce as temperatures set to warm up

After a few widely scattered showers around the region, we turn to mostly sunny skies on Wednesday and Thursday with highs around the 80-degree mark. Not too shabby I’d say, any rainfall today will be on the light side keeping April well below average in the rainfall department.

Although we are OK for now, continued below-normal rainfall is quickly going to put the county in the dry category. With precipitation expected to remain below average through July we could slip into one of the lesser drought levels. I’m already watering some of my shrubs and garden plants and many of you are as well. Check your soil and monitor the moisture content. This dry weather has a way to creep up on us as we enjoy the balmy weather.

It appears Friday through the weekend we experience another cool period and shower chances increase but again, no beneficial soaking rains on the horizon at this point. I noticed driving around the county this past weekend many low-lying areas that had standing water in them are now dry or nearly dried up.

I don’t see any killing frost on the way so we could be past the worst of those chilling events. It is still possible if we get a cold pool of air dropping down from the north with clear skies, but we’ll keep the old weather eye peeled for that chance. I’m getting anxious to plant some warm weather crops myself. A few more days.

At least I got my vehicle washed and with no measurable rain in the past week all is well. Officially, Vancouver has gone seven days without measurable rainfall. The last measurable rain was only a hundredth of an inch on April 21. Over half the month has been rain-free, unusual for the typical on again, off again showery weather in April.

As of Monday, Vancouver still has .99 of an inch of rain for the month. Hopefully a few light showers will reach the rain gauge today and put us over 1 inch. Looking back to the late 1800s, Vancouver has had only a dozen months with less than 1 inch of rain in April. The driest? Not long ago with only .33 of an inch in 2021. The second driest, .39 of an inch, was in 1939.

Enjoy the warm and sunny weather coming up.
