The Clark College men’s basketball team sits alone in first place after a thrilling 109-107 overtime win over Lane on Saturday.
Beau Swett blocked a 3-pointer at the buzzer to secure the win as the Penguins held the Titans were held to two points over the final 3:14 of overtime.
Swett, a sophomore from Woodland High School, also sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer, which tied the game 100-100 with 10 seconds left in regulation.
Anthony Sprauer led Clark with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson Esary (Kalama HS) added 28 points and Theo McMillan (Camas HS) had a double-double with 26 points and 12 assists.
At 7-2, the Penguins hold a one-game lead atop the Northwest Athletic Conference South Divison. Umpqua, Lane and Portland are all lurking at 6-3.
Men’s Basketball
RECORD: 15-6, 7-2, 1st in NWAC South.
The Penguins got their week off to a good start by pulling away for a 80-68 win at Chemeketa on Wednesday.
Trailing 36-32 at halftime, Clark launched a 20-7 run early in the second half thanks to three 3-pointers in a row by Swett.
Esary led the Penguins with 20 points, Terrell Moorer Jr. added 15 points and Swett finished with 14 points.
THIS WEEK: The Penguins have just one game, a road game at Clackamas (10-12, 4-5) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Women’s Basketball
RECORD: 10-12, 2-7, 7th in NWAC South.
After dropping a heartbreaker at Chemeketa on Wednesday, the Penguins couldn’t keep up with undefeated Lane at home on Saturday.
Mady Diaz made a jumper at the buzzer to give Chemeketa a 69-68 win. That came after Mia Hicks-Oliver put Clark ahead by making one of two free throws with 12 seconds left.
Emily Peabody and Oria Boyd each scored 16 points while Hicks-Oliver added 13 points for the Penguins.
Few teams have contained Lane, which leads the NWAC South in scoring at 81 points per game. Saturday, the Titans cruised to a 83-66 win at O’Connell Sports Center to improve to 22-0.
Ella Botnar and Miranda Gonzalez (Hudson’s Bay HS) each scored 11 points to lead Clark, which trailed 46-27 at halftime and lost for the fifth time in six games.
