Bella Hewes got on a roll early at the Class 3A state bowling championships. That was enough to once again put the Prairie senior among the state’s best.

Hewes finished third in the individual competition Wednesday in Tukwila one year after placing fifth at state. Her final score of 1104 was 69 pins behind champion Samyia Gildon of Thomas Jefferson.

After starting with 186, Hewes rolled 223 in the second of six games Wednesday. She then followed up with 203 in the third game before finishing with 152, 156 and 184.

Only five other bowlers had two games of 200 or more and only Gildon broke 200 three times.

With her third-place finish, Hewes fared even better than last week’s district tournament, where she placed fourth.

District champion Alissa Barber of Evergreen placed 11th with a score of 1005, including a 200 in the third game. Teammate Chloe Shove finished 12th, just two pins behind, and rolled 217 in the third game.

Kelso’s Arianna Long  was the second-highest finisher from the 3A Greater St. Helens League. She finished eighth, scoring 214 in the third game and 202 in the fifth.

Evergreen (4350) stands in fourth and Prairie (4170) is sixth entering Thursday’s slate of 14 Baker games. Thomas Jefferson leads by nearly 500 pins with 5326.

The 4A and 1A/2A tournaments take place Friday and Saturday in Tukwila.
