The Battle Ground City Council unanimously voted Monday to appoint Jeanie Kuypers to City Council Position No. 4, filling the seat previously held by Adrian Cortes, who is now serving in the state Senate.

Kuypers will serve out the remainder of Cortes’ four-year term that ends this fall, according to a news release from the City of Battle Ground.

The city council solicited applications to fill the temporary position and ultimately received eight applications, according to the news release. The candidates were evaluated during a closed-door executive session in January and four were brought in for interviews during Monday’s city council meeting.

Battle Ground Mayor Troy McCoy called the quality of candidates “astounding,” and encouraged them to continue getting involved in the city.

The Battle Ground City Council is a seven-member board responsible for the legislative function of the city such as establishing policy, passing local ordinances, approving budget appropriations and developing an overall vision for the community.
