For a second straight year, the 2A/1A girls bowling individual state championship was a battle between 2A Greater St. Helens League teammates.

Sanaa Tyler of Hudson’s Bay edged out teammate MJ Westmorland by nine pins to capture the first individual state title for a Bay bowler on Friday at Bowlero in Tukwila.

Last year, R.A. Long’s Lily Matson beat out teammate Ava Rodman for the 2A/1A state by just two pins.

Like last year’s tournament, Friday’s state title was decided on the final throw.

Both Tyler and Westmorland were tied for the lead with 960 pins after the first five games on Friday.

Tyler picked up a spare in the 10th frame, then knocked down nine pins on her last throw to finish with 185 pins.  Her six-game total was 1,145.

Westmorland needed to pick at least a spare in the 10th to keep her hopes for a title alive. If she picked up the spare after knocking down seven pins with her first ball, Westmorland would have had the chance to win the title with eight pins on her final throw.

But the senior left one pin standing to finish at 176 and 1,136 for six frames.

Tyler’s first-place finish was the best by a Bay bowler at state since Reagan Lorey had back-to-back 3A runner-up finishes in 2017-2018.

Hailey Wright of R.A. Long was fourth at 1,041, and teammate Jade Walters was fifth at 1,040. Columbia River’s Brooklyn Burnett was ninth (1,066).

Bay’s Abby Schoonover’s 10th-place finish (999) left Bay in the lead in the team standings with 5,104 pins, heading into Saturday’s baker games. R.A. Long was second at 4,938.

In the 4A state tournament, Skyview’s Brianna Hust finished with two strong games to place fifth with 1,100 pins.

Skyview’s Kaydree Rowland finished in seventh place with 1,084. Emm Johnson of Battle Ground was eighth at (1,077), and district champion Addysen Case of Skyview rebounded from a slow start to finish 10th at 1,053.

With three bowlers in the top 10, Skyview opened a commanding lead in the team standings heading into Saturday’s baker games.

Skyview is in first with 5,205 pins. Kamiakin is in second place at 5,049, followed by Eastmont at 5,010.
