Kelso girls pull away late from Shelton 64-53 in 3A bi-district tournament play-in game

Peyton Champagne scored seven of her game-high 19 points in a pivotal fourth quarter as the Kelso girls basketball beat Shelton 64-53 in a 3A bi-district play-in game Saturday in Kelso.

Shelton (14-7) forced the play-in game by placing second in the 2A Evergreen Conference. Kelso (10-10) placed third in the 3A Greater St. Helens League.

The game was tied at 44-44 after three quarters. Champagne hit a big 3-pointer in the final two minutes to put Kelso up 57-52. Shelton never got closer.

Maali Amrine had six of her 15 points in the fourth quarter. Hayden Johnson added 14 points for Kelso, which awaits its bi-district matchup when brackets are released Sunday.
