Letter: Can we keep our republic?

The audacity of clergy gently imploring empathy and fairness from our president … in a sermon. You can understand why Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., called for this U.S. citizen’s deportation, right?

I contacted the congressman’s D.C. office to clarify what law (executive order?) allows deportation of citizens. He feigned ignorance of my ask. I also inquired as to whether the congressman is working on such legislation. The response was “I’ll let you know if he does.” I could hear his smirk.

People, pay attention to what is happening. Threats against citizens for speaking out should outrage all of us. Don’t accept this insane “new normal.” Don’t disconnect or be so overwhelmed by the firehose of executive orders and purges that you check out. Inaction leads to complicity.

Benjamin Franklin’s description of our government was prescient: “A Republic, if you can keep it.” Can we?
