Letter: Pleasure in others’ misfortune

“Schadenfreude” is a word one doesn’t hear much, mostly because it’s hard to pronounce, the meaning is obscure and, of course, it’s foreign. I learned the definition (“to take pleasure in the misfortune of others”) in high school German class and have been waiting lo these many years to use it. Thanks Trump!

Beginning with the tariffs, we’ll be getting higher costs for food, goods and services. Do you like that, MAGA? When you voted for Trump, did you think about how your Medicare and Social Security payments would be at risk? Did you wonder why, in the myriad ways our federal government serves and protects us, those services would slow down or stop?

Based on demographics, MAGA voters (other than the billionaires) will be much affected. I think our little household should be able to weather the next four years. But I’ll be standing by to say, “Told ya so.” With no little pleasure. Schadenfreude, MAGA!
