Letter: Support Evergreen schools

Have you ever paid attention to your thinking when you are under stress? Especially when that stress lasts for multiple days? You’ll notice yourself forgetting the most familiar routines and information, and learning new information becomes difficult.

Many of my students live lives of persistent stress. They are intelligent, resilient children who come to me with gaps in their math learning. They need more than just an explanation given by me to the entire class. In order to learn, they need me sitting beside them, talking with them, understanding their thinking and misconceptions, so I can teach each child in ways that work for them. This is a one- or two-students-at-a-time process and requires smaller class sizes and more support (e.g., paraeducators) in the classroom.

I worry that the loss of levy funds would move us in the opposite direction — larger class sizes, fewer staff, cuts to special programs. Please vote yes for the Evergreen Public Schools levy by Feb. 11.
