Union girls, Camas boys earn No. 1 seeds to bi-district basketball tournament

An 18-2 record and back-to-back wins over a defending state champion was enough to earn Union girls basketball the top seed in the Class 4A District 3-4 tournament on Sunday.

And the Camas boys also earned the No. 1 seed after winning 11 of its last 12 games.

Union will host No. 16 seed Puyallup in a first-round game Thursday. With a win, the Titans then would host a winner-to-state quarterfinal game Saturday against No. 8 Rogers-Puyallup or No. 9 Kennedy Catholic.

Union earned the top seed after back-to-back wins over reigning 4A state champ Camas on Jan. 30 and 31st. That helped the Titans earn their first 4A Greater St. Helens League title since the 2018-19 season.

Bi-district tournament seeding was determined by a committee and released Sunday afternoon.

With six berths to state this year, down from seven, the bi-district tournament will not include winner-to-state or loser-out games in the first round. Instead, the 16-team tournament is a true double-elimination format.

Camas girls (16-5) earned the No. 4 seed and will host No. 13 Kentwood on Thursday. The Papermakers could also be in line to host a winner-to-state quarterfinal game Saturday against No. 5 Olympia or No. 12 Skyview, which earned the last of three bi-district berths from the 4A GSHL.

Camas boys (17-4) won 11 of its last 12 games in rolling to the 4A GSHL title. The Papermakers host No. 16 Graham-Kapowsin on Wednesday. With a win, Camas would host No. 8 Sumner or No. 9 Skyview (14-7) in a winner-to-state quarterfinal on Friday.

Union boys, which handed Camas its only loss in 4A GSHL play, are the No. 11 seed and travel to face No. 6 Emerald Ridge on Wednesday.

3A Girls: Mountain View No. 4 seed

After going undefeated in the Class 3A GSHL, Mountain View is in line to host two bi-district playoff games as the No. 4 seed.

The Thunder (14-6) will host No. 13 Thomas Jefferson on Thursday. With a win, Mountain View would host a winner-to-state quarterfinal game Saturday against No. 5 River Ridge or No. 12 Kelso.

3A GSHL runner-up Evergreen earned the No. 7 seed. The Plainsmen (10-10) host a first-round game against No. 10 Lakes on Thursday.

The 16-team bi-district tournament has seven berths to the 20-team 3A state playoffs.

3A Boys: Prairie, Mountain View start at home

3A GSHL champion Prairie and runner-up Mountain View will both host first-round games in the bi-district tournament.

The No. 6 seeded Falcons (13-7) host No. 11 Lakes on Wednesday. With a win, Prairie would face either No. 3 Federal Way or No. 14 Silas in a winner-to-state quarterfinal Friday hosted by the better seed.

Mountain View (13-7) is the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 White River on Wednesday. The winner would likely face top seed Auburn Mountainview in the quarterfinals.

Evergreen earned the No. 13 seed after winning four consecutive games to capture the last of the 3A GSHL’s three postseason berths. The Plainsmen (8-12) travel to face No. 4 Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma.
