Letter: Empathy, compassion are not sins

By Jerry Mathis, Vancouver

Are you happy yet? We are experiencing the full effects of the nonsensical, ignorant and sometimes incoherent blabbering and actions of a severely demented old man. You wouldn’t let an elderly relative act this way without seeking care, so why allow it in a convicted criminal whose total focus is only on himself? Empathy and compassion are not sins.

I am an 80-plus-year-old who leans toward the liberal and progressive and who tries to live my life following the rules suggested in Exodus 20 and the example and teachings of Jesus Christ. Yes, I refer to myself as Christian, and I will continue to pray for sanity and the knowledge of right and wrong for those who have lost their way.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
