Letter: Bicycle fee would make sense

By Bob Serdar, Vancouver
Published: February 11, 2025, 6:00am

Implementing license fees for bicycles in Vancouver would help foster a safe and more efficient infrastructure for cyclists. With this fee, Vancouver could allocate funds specifically designated for construction and maintenance of bike lanes.

Bicycles are considered vehicles, use our roads and follow the same rules as drivers when riding, so why not implement a fee for infrastructure that benefits the users? These fees could also support education and awareness about safe-cycling practices, which could result in reducing accidents and improving overall traffic safety. A licensing program could allow Vancouver to track and regulate bicycle ownership, which could be useful in city planning purposes. The small cost of an annual license can help foster a more sustainable and well-supported cycling culture, benefiting both cyclists and our community.
