Skyview (14-7) earned the No. 2 seed from the 4A Greater St. Helens League with a 53-41 win over Union. That earned the Storm the No. 9 seed at bi-district, meaning Skyview will hit the road on Wednesday to face No. 8 seed Sumner (16-6). The winner of that game will face the Camas/Graham-Kapowsin winner on Friday.
Union (15-6), the 4A GSHL’s No. 3 team, is the No. 11 seed and will play at No. 6 Emerald Ridge (16-6) on Wednesday.
In the girls 4A bracket, Union (18-2) took the top seed after only a one-point overtime loss to A.C. Davis of Yakima and a two-point loss to Camas on Jan. 10. Since that loss to Camas, the Titans won their last eight by at least 14 points.
The Titans will host No. 16 Puyallup in the first round on Thursday. Union routed the Vikings 68-29 in December.
Camas (16-5) earned the No. 4 seed and will host No. 13 Kentwood (7-13) on Thursday. Camas beat Kentwood 73-52 on Dec. 6.
Skyview (8-13) drew the No. 11 seed and will play at No. 6 Olympia (17-5).
In the 3A girls bracket, 3A GSHL champion Mountain View (14-6) earned the No. 4 seed and will host No. 13 Thomas Jefferson (12-8) on Thursday. Evergreen (10-10) also will be home Thursday after drawing the No. 7 seed, meeting No. 10 Lakes (12-11).
Kelso (10-10) beat Shelton on Saturday to earn a spot in the bi-district tournament. The Hilanders are the No. 12 seed and will play at No. 5 River Ridge (18-6).
A 3A GSHL title only earned the Prairie (13-7) the No. 6 seed in the 3A boys bracket. The Falcons will host No. 11 Lakes (16-8) on Wednesday.
League runner-up Mountain View (13-7) also gets a home game as the No. 8 seed. The Thunder host No. 9 White River (15-7).
Evergreen (8-12), which won its last four to earn a playoff berth, is the No. 13 seed and will play at No. 4 Bellarmine (19-6).
Plainsmen hit their stride
The Evergreen boys basketball team is playing its best basketball at the right time — just in time for the postseason.
The Plainsmen’s 67-61 victory Friday over 3A Greater St. Helens League champion Prairie secured their berth to this week’s bi-district tournament.
By virtue of the league’s tiebreaker rules using quality wins, Evergreen earned the 3A GSHL’s final postseason spot over Heritage. Evergreen and Heritage finished tied for third at 4-4 in league after the Timberwolves’ 70-56 win Friday over Kelso, but Evergreen secured the playoff bid because of the win over a higher-ranked Falcons team in the league standings.
Evergreen (8-12) enters the postseason on a season-best four-game winning streak. After starting league play 0-4 — a long streak that stretched to a season-long six games — the Plainsmen won their final four league games: Heritage, Kelso, Mountain View and Prairie.
Voice of Spudders retires
Scott Hughes is retiring as Ridgefield High School basketball’s public address announcer at the end of the 2024-25 season, a role he’s held since 2007.
Prior to the Ridgefield boys’ second to last home game of the season Wednesday against R.A. Long, Spudders head coach Jason Buffum spoke to the crowd to recognize Hughes for his work over the last 17 seasons.
“His passionate voice has brought excitement and energy to every game, creating some unforgettable memories for all of us here,” Buffum said.
Hughes was presented a Ridgefield basketball jersey signed by current Spudders players, including his grandson, Jack Hughes, a senior captain on the team.
Scott Hughes announced his final Ridgefield home game on Friday against Hudson’s Bay, also coinciding with the Spudders’ senior night.
Ridgefield (13-7) is the No. 4 seed from the 2A Greater St. Helens League for the District 4 playoffs, and will face 2A Evergreen Conference league champion Black Hills (14-6) in the first round Saturday.
