WOODLAND — For years now, girls basketball teams in District 4 know the road to the Class 2A state tournament includes going through W.F. West.

That’s what Woodland faces when it meets the Bearcats out of Chehalis in next week’s winner-to-state district semifinal. Woodland topped Tumwater, 63-27 on Friday to kick off the 2A District 4 tournament.

If W.F. West sounds familiar, it should. The Bearcats have reached state the past seven seasons with three trophies. One of those is the Class 2A state championship in 2018. The team is even more familiar to Woodland; the two met in the season opener Dec. 2 — a game W.F. West, 63-31.

But Woodland (17-5), runners-up in the 2A Greater St. Helens, believes it is a different team than early December. A lot has changed in 21 games.

“We’ve got some more experience under our belts,” said senior point guard Addi Stading, “and more chemistry from playing each other. I think we’ll be a whole different team when we play them next.

That game is 7 p.m. Monday in Chehalis.

Friday, Standing was one of three players scoring in double figures with 13 points, and added five assists and five steals. Sophomore Kennedy Bockert led the way with a game-best 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Lainey Haden chipped in 13 points.

The two also combined for eight of the team’s 16 steals behind Woodland’s full-court press from the tip. As a team, Woodland held Tumwater to single-digit scoring for three of four quarters. The Beavers led 59-20 entering the final 8 minutes.

“We made sure not to allow any runs,” Haden said.
