HAZEL DELL — On a chilly February Saturday, WSU Clark County Master Gardeners pruned the kiwi vines at the Hazel Dell School and Community Garden. The Small Fruit Team, headed by Master Gardener Pam Russell, has pruned the kiwi each winter for the last five years. Every year they cut back more than 70 percent of last season’s growth, as the branches can grow 20 feet.

Kiwi occasional feature in school lunches, so the fruit is of high interest fruit to the schoolchildren who visit the garden for outdoor lessons. They enjoy seeing kiwi growing and are amazed at the size of the vines, which can reach the top of the freeway sound wall.
