The Skyview boys basketball team is hoping history repeats.
Last year, the Storm survived two loser-out games in the District 3-4 tournament to reach the Class 4A state tournament, eventually earning a sixth-place trophy.
Saturday, Skyview again prevailed in a loser-out game by beating Graham-Kapowsin, 52-36, at home.
Up next, the No. 9 seed Storm travel for another loser-out game at No. 6 Emerald Ridge on Tuesday near Puyallup. The winner advances to a winner-to-state, loser-out game Thursday.
“For a lot of our guys, this is pretty similar to where we were last year,” Skyview coach Matt Gruhler said. “Our guys are ready to show we can do it again.”
Zeno Calastas, a 6-foot-9 senior, led Skyview with 15 points and was a disruptor near the rim on defense. The Storm (15-8) kept No. 16 seed Graham-Kapowsin (7-15) from getting any rhythm on offense, holding the Eagles to single-digits in the first three quarters.
“I was pleased with the effort and communication,” Gruhler said. “Those are two of the big checkmarks for how we play defense.”
Ryan Hanson added 14 points, including two 3-pointers in the first quarter as Skyview surged to a 17-8 lead. The Storm gradually pulled away, stretching the lead to 38-21 after three quarters.
