Clark College Report: Snow pauses men’s basketball title chase

Snow put a pause on the Clark College basketball season just ahead of a decisive week in the title chase for the men’s team.

Saturday’s men’s and women’s home doubleheader against Linn-Benton was postponed until March 1.

For the men’s team, that meant some extra rest ahead of critical games against Umpqua on Monday, Portland on Wednesday and Southwestern Oregon on Saturday.

The Penguins entered the week atop the Northwest Athletic Conference South Division at 9-2.

Portland lurks just a half-game behind at 9-3 while Umpqua and Southwestern Oregon are 8-4.

The top four teams earn spots in the NWAC tournament, though Umpqua is ineligible for postseason competition.

Clark enters the week with six games remaining in the regular season.

Men’s Basketball

RECORD: 17-6, 9-2, 1st in NWAC South.

The Penguins pulled away in the second half for a 86-66 win at Mt. Hood last Wednesday.

Leading 38-35 at the break, Clark used an 11-4 run in the first five minutes of the second half to gain some distance.

Jackson Esary (Kalamas High) had 23 points and Theo McMillan (Camas High) added 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

LeDarius Washington (Mountain View High) had 15 points for Mt. Hood (5-20, 1-12).

THIS WEEK: Clark hits to road to face Portland (16-8, 9-3) on Wednesday before hosting Southwestern Oregon (19-6, 8-4) at 4 p.m. Saturday at O’Connell Sports Center.

Women’s Basketball

RECORD: 11-13, 3-8, 7th in NWAC South.

The Penguins had their most-lopsided win of the season in demolishing Mt. Hood 83-28 on the road last Wednesday. Payton Allen scored 18 points while Jayda Jackson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

THIS WEEK: The Penguins play at at Portland (13-12, 6-6) on Wednesday then return home to face Southwestern Oregon (5-17, 1-10) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
