Sophie Buzzard of Camas girls basketball is The Columbian 2024-25 Week 18 high school athlete of the week, sponsored by Killer Burger.
Buzzard received 438 of the 1,177 votes cast to win the honor.
The senior shot 10 for 14 from the field and scored 25 points in a first-round bi-district win over Kentwood.
Nominees are selected by The Columbian staff after a review of the previous week’s results. Suggestions for nominees can by made by anyone, but must be received by 6 p.m. Sunday for consideration.
Winners of the athlete-of-the-week may not be nominated again during the regular season, and no athlete may be nominated in consecutive weeks.
Nominees are posted and voting begins each Monday and runs through Wednesday.
Here are the accomplishments of the other Week 18 nominees:
COLIN GRAEME, SETON CATHOLIC BOYS SWIMMING: The senior was selected as the swimmer of the meet at the 2A district meet, racing to wins in the 50 free and 100 butterfly.
JOSIAH JOINTER, FORT VANCOUVER BOYS BASKETBALL: The senior scored a game-high 17 points as the Trappers moved within one win of the program’s first state playoff berth since 1990.
ABIGAIL MENDOZA, PRAIRIE GYMNASTICS: The senior won the vault and beam on her way to winning the all-around title in the 3A/2A/1A district meet.
ALIYAH VARGAS, WASHOUGAL GIRLS WRESTLING: The senior won all three of her matches by pin to capture the 145-pound title at the 2A girls district tournament.
