Sturgeon retention in the Bonneville and The Dalles pools of the Columbia River Gorge closed after a single day of angling.

The Washington and Oregon departments of Fish and Wildlife announced the closure Thursday afternoon.

Fishing was scheduled to be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays until 675 sturgeon were retained in the Bonneville pool and 275 in The Dalles pool.

The WDFW noted that 1,365 fish were caught in the Bonneville Pool on the Jan. 1 opener. Numbers were not reported for The Dalles, but WDFW said it its news release that “catch rates and effort in The Dalles pool were higher than preseason expectations.”

There were reportedly long lines to launch on Wednesday at the Drano Lake and Hood River boat ramps.

Catch-and-release fishing still is allowed.
