Regalia returned: La Center family gives tribal gift back to Rosebud Sioux Tribe after five generations

LA CENTER — While James Newell never had any active connection with Native American history or culture, a valuable collection of 19th century tribal heirlooms languished in his family’s closet for years. Make that literal lifetimes.

The historical trove — a lush headdress of eagle feathers, a quiver and arrows, beautifully beaded and fringed moccasins, leggings, a shirt and horn, all preserved in a strapped suitcase — was never supposed to be secret.
